Prince Harry has been spending considerable amount of time in the States qualifying to be an Apache (helicopter) pilot. The Brits have so few Apache pilots that they cannot spare any for the summer of 2012. Harry, who served in Afghanistan in 2007 and 2008, will return to Afghanistan missing both the Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – yes I had to Google it. The Jubilee will celebrate the Queen’s 60th year on the throne – well everyone will be celebrating accept for Prince Charles.
The question of where or if he is deployed is up to the Ministry of Defense chain of command as it would be for any soldier, the source adds.
And while he would be disappointed to miss the Diamond Jubilee – marking the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s ascension to the British throne – he has said she would understand.
“They will be concerned, just as any other family [would be],” Harry said this month. “But my grandmother … she understands more than anybody else that I’m serving my country.”
Harry will begin the final leg of his training in Arizona where he will fully qualify to fly the Apache. Harry’s father is technically in charge of all of the helicopters in Britain, hence both Harry and William both being helicopter pilots.
